Problems with ground loops

On certain ships which have multiple interfaces, there can exist electrical phenomena called ground loops. In fact, certain devices may have masses which are at different potentials.

If we take the example of a GPS connected in parallel to a computer and a radar. The simple fact of connecting the GPS to the radar and the computer can disturb output signals (mass reference different between the 3 devices). An extraneous current results which prevents correct reading of NMEA chains on the computer.

Temporary solution

Connect only the TxD equipment wire and not the Gnd (Ground) wire to the computerâs serial port.

Permanent solution

Firstly, isolate the computers power supply using a converter with galvanic isolation (isolation of the negative pole of the battery with the reference mass of the computer).

Then opto-couple serial links between the computer and all connected electronic equipment (contact you dealer).
